I'm getting evaluated on Thursday and I'm having the hardest time coming up with short simple activity on a kindergarten level about predicting. We're discussing Reindeer this week and would LOVE it go with Reindeer, but it DOES NOT have to. I would love to hear your ideas and inspirations. Thanks in advance to all my blog friends!
Ugh! So sorry that you're being evaluated so closely to Christmas! I know my students are pretty nuts right now. I was thinking that you could maybe use a book, like "Olive, The Other Reindeer" or one that they're not familiar with, and cover up the words so they can just see the pictures and show the first few pages. Then ask for some predictions about what the book is about or what comes next. Best of luck!

What if you make up a story (or their might be a real book) about Rudolph losing his red nose. The kiddos could predict what might happen to Rudolph, or what Rudolph could do to repair his nose. I saw a cute Rudolph Nose Repair craft on another blog (I can't remember off hand, but I'll search for it). There is so much cute reindeer clipart floating around, that you could probably make a cute smart board (if you have one) version of the story. OOOHHH, I'm excited about this! I might just have to do something similar with my 2nd graders. Good luck on your observation--I'm sure whatever you do will be fab-u-lous!!! :)

My idea doesn't go with reindeer...sorry, but we just read an adorable book called The Night After Christmas. It wasn't one my kids had heard before. We were using Reader's Toolkit and making and confirming predictions. My kiddos are 4th grade but the pics are great for the little ones to make predictions. We stopped every so often to check and make sure our predictions were corrct or check if we needed to change them based on what we had read. Good luck with your evaluation....what timing!! Right before Christmas!

How about something with Jan Brett's, The Wild Christmas Reindeer? There are some cute activities on her site and as always the illustrations are phenomenal! The outside edge of the page pictures tell a separate story, but I think both story lines could work for some predicting! Fun for First
How about a scavenger hunt of sorts? You could do the Rudolph story that someone previously commented about and add a scavenger hunt to it. Have the students predict where they think the nose might be, than give them clues for the building or even just the classroom. It would be a good way to get them moving since they are all so jazzed for Christmas!

I love using Jan Brett's books for read alouds to work on predictions - we've been reading The Gingerbread Baby, & The Gingerbread Friends - both great to work on predictions because the illustrations around the edges show what Mattie is working on. They're not reindeer but super fun and easy for kids to predict. I'd do the G.Baby ahead of time so they are used to the way Jan sets up her books and then the G. Friends for the observations. They're so cute! :0) Good luck!
